Yuliya Kozhemyako (Supr),
Yuha's Nightmares, 2021
Yuha’s Nightmares is a simulation game about the dreams and nightmares of a character named Yuha, the virtual doppelganger behind game developer Yuliya Kozhemyako (aka Supr).
Yuha’s realistic and coherent dreams can suddenly turn nonsensical and confused. During her disturbed sleep, she can see through walls, wander around, and move through the structure of every floor… until a series of glitches reveal the ‘underside’ of the digital world.
The first episode of the game, Catastrophe, which is presented here, is set in the protagonist’s room. The player in the first-person game is invited to explore the built environment, collect objects in limited time quests, and find a way out of a building that is on the verge of collapse. «It might be not only the house but the entire world that is crumbling, but who knows, maybe there is still a safe place to be found.»
The tension between the emotional landscape of Yuliya’s mind and that of her digital twin forms an otherworldly experience aimed at self-discovery and potential catharsis: a reward for self-study and working with one’s complexes, fears, and desires.
